We speak nowadays of "social entrepreneurs" and "crowd-funding" - of "building a cause" and working to make it "go viral." Donating, and volunteering, and service to a larger communitarian good are all readily programmed and semi-formal. There are structures, and programs, and networks, and software, a guidelines for it all. Then we put it on Facebook and Twitter, where nonprofits and social ventures compete for attention and the same pool of dollars.
